It’s recommended that you take folic acid daily before you’re pregnant and until you are 12 weeks pregnant. Folic acid is important to help prevent certain birth defects such as spina bifida. Vitamin D is important for a range of functions in the body, but it can be difficult to get enough of it so taking a supplement can help. You can get supplements for both from pharmacies and supermarkets or on prescription if needed. Preconception or pregnancy multivitamins are also widely available.
