Fertility Reviews

How do I understand more about my fertility?

Whether you just want more information about your fertility, you’re thinking about preserving your fertility or you’re ready to start a family, there are a few investigations that will give us valuable insight into your fertility potential, arming you with the facts to create your future family.

Check your hormones

An anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) blood test will give us an indication of your ovarian reserve (or egg count). Everyone has different AMH results, but what we all have in common is this declines as we get older. By testing your AMH, and plotting it against the ‘normal’ values for your age, you’ll be able to decide if fertility preservation is something you may need to consider.

Have an ultrasound scan

A transvaginal (internal) pelvic ultrasound scan allows us to look at your uterus and ovaries in more detail and count your follicles, as well as possibly highlighting gynaecological conditions you weren’t aware of, giving us additional vital information to use alongside your AMH test, so we can greater understand your fertility potential.

Meet with a fertility doctor

Meeting with an experienced fertility doctor who can take you through your results and put them in context is an invaluable part of any fertility review. Your AMH result is useful when compared to other people in your age group, but the insight is greatly enhanced with a pelvic ultrasound, your overall medical history and a discussion about your personal circumstances and future family planning goals.

Who may benefit from fertility preservation?

It’s an option for more people than you realise: single people, those in a committed relationship or those still figuring out if they want to create a family with their current partner.

Emma Whitney, Director of Embryology and Genetics, has written an article for Hertility, exploring the science behind fertility preservation, the difference between freezing eggs and embryos, and the groups of people who are or should be thinking about fertility preservation.

I want to preserve my fertility

Making the decision to preserve your fertility is a way to feel more in control of your future, but there are a few things to consider first: your age and when you want to start a family, who you want to start a family with, and how many children you want. Depending on your answers, our team will help you decide if freezing eggs or embryos is the best option to complete your family goals.
