HyCoSy
Investigating your fertility with a HyCoSy

A HyCoSy is a safe and reliable investigation that gives you peace of mind, checks fallopian tubes are not blocked and helps to optimise success for future fertility treatment.

A HyCoSy is a tubal patency test

HyCoSy stands for Hysterosalpingo Contrast Sonography and is a short and very routine procedure to check the fallopian tubes for any blockages or abnormalities.

Any blockages may be stopping the sperm from meeting the egg.

A HyCoSy involves using a dye to help highlight the area and then an ultrasound scan, as normal-looking fallopian tubes can’t be viewed by a standard ultrasound or x-ray in the absence of contrast.

40% of infertility in couples is due to dysfunction of the female reproductive organs

The female egg is carried from the ovaries to the uterus via the fallopian tubes, so if there are any damages or blockages along the way, it can cause issues with reproduction. A HyCoSy scan looks at the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes to see if this is the case.

The reproductive system is very complicated and involves hundreds of steps, if something goes wrong at any one of these steps, it can cause fertility issues.

A short, out-patient procedure

The HyCoSy procedure is a transvaginal procedure and takes around 30 minutes.

A small catheter will be inserted through the cervix and passed through to the uterus, where it will deposit dye for the fallopian tubes.

The dye is 100% safe and won’t have any effect on future fertility, it just allows us the see the tubes better.

The treatment itself although short and routine, will be performed by one of our highly trained gynaecologists. They will carry out an ultrasound and if the fallopian tubes are open, we will be able to see the fluid passing through.

A HyCoSy test is a safe and routine procedure

With all procedures there are some small side effects. A small amount of pain or discomfort may occur from the catheter; however, this can be treated with paracetamol.

If you are nervous about this, you can take pain killers 2-hours before the treatment.

Why would I need a HyCoSy test?

A tubal patency (or HyCoSy) test is an ultrasound scan in which contrast is used to show the flow of fluid through the fallopian tubes. Sometimes your consultant may recommend this for a few reasons, but it can help in a number of ways.

FERTILITY + GYNAECOLOGY

We strongly believe that a woman’s gynaecological health should be considered at the start of any fertility investigation. That’s why sometimes we’ll recommend tests such as a HyCoSy.

Understanding why

Getting to the root cause and reason why you’re not achieving a pregnancy, will help us create a personalised plan and ultimately identify the quickest way to achieve a live birth.

Minimally invasive

Tests such as a HyCoSy, allow us to understand more about what’s happening, so we can potentially avoid more invasive expensive fertility treatments further down the line, saving you time and money.

How much does a HyCoSy cost?

We know that gynaecological and fertility treatments are not only an emotional commitment but also a financial one too, and with the ultimate goal of finding the quickest, easiest, and least invasive way to get you pregnant, we’ve made sure our prices are competitive.
