What happens after your first IVF consultation?

Starting IVF is a significant step, and your first consultation with a doctor at The Evewell often feels like the beginning of a new chapter. After reviewing your results, medical history, and fertility goals with your consultant, many patients wonder: What happens next?

To help you feel confident and informed, we’ve broken the process down into clear steps. Each stage is designed to support you, answer your questions, and make sure you are fully prepared for treatment.

Just had your first consultation at The Evewell? In the video below, Rebecca Hay, Head of Patient Services Operations, explains what happens next – from your personalised treatment plan to your nurse consultation and everything in between.

Step 1: Your personalised treatment plan

Following your consultation, your doctor will design a bespoke treatment plan tailored specifically to you. This plan is not a “one size fits all” template, it is created using your medical history, test results, and fertility goals to give you the very best chance of success.

The aim is to optimise every aspect of your cycle, from the medication chosen to the timings of your treatment. You can feel reassured that your plan has been carefully thought through by your consultant, who understands your unique circumstances.

Step 2: Costing and timings with our care coordination team

Once your treatment plan has been created, it is passed to our care coordination team. Their role is to help you plan the practical side of your journey, ensuring that the process feels smooth and transparent.

During this stage, you will:

  • Receive a clear and tailored costing plan so you understand the financial aspects of treatment
  • Discuss your preferred start date and how this fits with your personal and family commitments
  • Be reassured that there are no waiting lists at The Evewell, you won’t be placed in a queue, and we will always do our best to align with your timelines

This is a collaborative stage, designed to give you flexibility and control over when your treatment begins.

Step 3: Nurse consultation and treatment planning

The next step is a comprehensive consultation with one of our nurses, usually lasting between one hour and ninety minutes. This is an important appointment that ensures you feel completely prepared and confident before starting treatment.

During your nurse consultation, you can expect:

  • A detailed explanation of your treatment plan, including a clear overview of each stage
  • Guidance on your medication: when and how to take it, possible side effects, and tips for managing them
  • Lifestyle and dietary advice to help support your treatment and optimise your results
  • Time to go through all the regulatory paperwork, including consent forms, so everything is completed and in place
  • Space to ask any questions, big or small, about what lies ahead

We allow plenty of time for this appointment because our goal is for you to leave feeling reassured, knowledgeable, and ready. By the end, you should have no uncertainty about what’s coming next or when you’ll need to come into the clinic.

Step 4: Meeting the embryology team

One of the most important, and sometimes most anxiety-provoking, aspects of IVF is what happens behind the scenes in the laboratory. That’s why, as part of your preparation, you will meet with our embryology team.

During this session, they will explain:

  • What happens to your eggs, sperm, and embryos during your cycle
  • How embryos are cultured, monitored, and cared for in the lab
  • When you can expect updates and communication from the embryology team

For many patients, this meeting is a turning point. It allows you to put faces to the people who will be looking after your embryos and builds trust and confidence in the science behind your treatment. Knowing who is caring for your precious embryos can make the process feel less overwhelming and more personal.

Step 5: Preparing to begin treatment

Once you’ve completed your nurse and embryology consultations, everything is in place for your treatment to begin. You’ll know your medication schedule, your clinic appointments, and the team members who will be supporting you every step of the way.

Our aim is for you to feel fully equipped, both practically and emotionally, before you start. IVF can feel daunting, but with a clear plan, the right support, and trusted professionals guiding you, you can approach treatment with confidence and reassurance.

Final thoughts
