What to Expect Before Starting Fertility Treatment

Before beginning any type of fertility treatment, it’s important to understand the first steps. Preparation looks different for each person depending on their circumstances; some people may already have had several rounds of treatment or investigations, while for others, this might be their very first conversation with a fertility clinic, and it can be hard to know what the right first step is without diving straight into a clinical consultation.

As a Patient Services Coordinator at The Evewell, I speak to patients every single day, and I’ve pulled together a clear guide to what usually happens before IVF or fertility treatment begins.

Who will I speak to first?

Your first point of contact will be with our patient coordination team. We take the time to understand your journey so far, what has brought you to this point, and what you’re hoping to achieve. Based on this, we’ll guide you towards the most suitable next steps.

What fertility tests are needed before treatment?

Many patients will need some basic fertility investigations before moving forward with an Initial Consultation. These tests give valuable insights into fertility potential and help consultants create a tailored plan. This also means you can arrive at the Initial Consultation, ready to discuss the test results and a treatment plan.

Typical tests include:

  • Ultrasound scan – A transvaginal scan to check the structure of the uterus and ovaries, look for gynaecological issues such as PCOS or endometriosis, and look at the number of follicles, which will indicate how you may respond to treatment.
  • AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone) – A blood test that indicates ovarian reserve (egg count).
  • TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone) – A blood test, usually done alongside AMH, to check thyroid function as it affects ovulation and early pregnancy.
  • Semen analysis – If having treatment with a male partner, they will also need to provide a semen sample, so our embryologists can assess sperm count, motility and morphology, and get an overall understanding of the sperm health.

If you’ve had these tests recently, you may not need to repeat them. If not, we can help arrange them for you.

How do I choose the right fertility consultant?

Choosing the right consultant can be just as important as choosing the right treatment. At The Evewell, the consultant you see at your initial consultation looks after you throughout your journey, from that first initial consultation and follows you all the way throughout treatment.

Once we understand more about your background and fertility goals, we’ll go through our team of consultants so you can choose one based on their approach, expertise or specialisms, or even whether you’d prefer a female consultant. This choice is completely yours.

Every afternoon, we also hold a daily multidisciplinary team meeting with all consultants, the nursing team, embryologists and patient services, ensuring that your care benefits from the collective expertise of the clinic. So even though you have one named consultant, the entire team has an overview and input into your treatment, giving you the best possible chance of success.

What about my medical history?

Unique to The Evewell is that our consultants are specialists in both gynaecology and fertility, meaning they’ll review any conditions that could affect treatment, including:

  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
  • Endometriosis or Adenomyosis
  • Uterine conditions, such as fibroids or polyps
  • Blocked fallopian tubes
  • As well as thorough investigations of the sperm – after all, it takes an egg and a sperm to make a baby!

This is where consultant matchmaking can be especially valuable, as you may prefer a specialist with experience in certain clinical areas.

How can I learn more before booking a consultation?

We understand you may want more information before committing to a consultation at The Evewell. That’s why we offer virtual open evenings, an opportunity to meet the team and ask questions.

Each session includes three short video calls with:

  1. A consultant
  2. An embryologist
  3. A member of the patient services team

This will hopefully allow you to get a better feel for the clinic and also answer any more specific questions you have before going forward with any testing or a consultation.

What support and advice can I access before booking a consultation?

Before you even schedule a consultation, you can explore our Support hub on The Evewell website. There, we publish expert articles, patient stories and reliable insights about fertility, treatment options and emotional wellbeing.

Our newsletter and Instagram also share regular tips, so you can feel informed, reassured and supported from day one.
